An interview with Amy Miller, Healer and Owner of Healing Haus.
Amy! My sweet friend. You have such a natural talent for bringing people together + making them feel seen and appreciated for who they truly are. Even though we can’t gather in person at this moment, how can people hold space for each other throughout this journey?
Thank you, Dear! Some of my favorite ways to connect with friends lately are to send cards or surprise packages in the mail (especially for my quarantine bday friends – a sparkler and confetti is a must!) I also love leaving voice notes for friends, it really brings a depth and a warmth beyond texting. I facilitate a few share circles, and have joined a few more as a participant, and I am continually blown away by how connective and rich a learning experience it can be to share with strangers. Even on phone or video calls with friends, I find that leading with vulnerability and a true answer to, ‘How are you?’ leads to a richer experience. Being the one who unfurls first really sets the tone for others to meet you there and the results are always so beautiful. I think the most important consideration before doing any of this is to check in with yourself first and see if you have the capacity. There is no shame in rescheduling if you’re feeling drained or depleted, especially during these times.
We actually just had a conversation after last week’s newsletter about your own journey with self confidence and self worth. I know we could talk about this for hours (do I feel a podcast needing to be revitalized??) on this subject, but what is your advice for a person trying to earn money right now + not feel bad about it? I know that when you’re working within’ your natural zone of genius it can feel like such a sticky place to be — thoughts used to arise around charging for something that came so easily to us. I feel like many people will resonate.
Yes, this is definitely a passionate topic for me, and one I speak about NOT from a place of mastery, but as someone who is still very much in it. Starting my business really showed me the difference between self confidence (because aside from the normal imposter syndrome, I am confident in my abilities) and self worth (Wait, I need to place a monetary value on my gifts AND ask people for that? Yikes!) I have struggled during this time to put my offerings out because I felt like, how dare I profit off this global crisis? A beloved mentor told me, let people decide what they spend money on — be it Netflix, Amazon grocery orders, or healing. That helped, but still didn’t address the part of me inside that felt torn. Fortunately I had a few clients reach out to me asking for sessions, and after seeing their sense of relief and comfort, my inner monologue changed its tune to, who am I to be sitting on gifts that can serve others when they need it most? One of my favorite ways to make sure my services are accessible to all is through offering a “By Donation” option.
Speaking of your natural gifts, I know you perform reiki. Why do you feel healing on an energetic level is so important to our wellbeing? How does reiki help the people you work on + how can we help ourselves “do the work”?
Reiki is so amazing for its ability to bring deep relaxation, self-connection and an overall sense of alignment (even distance reiki, as I’m offering during quarantine!) What I find equally valuable is the feedback discovered in these sessions as an energetic reading — oftentimes I’m able to highlight a pattern for a client that they can’t yet see, or confirm a suspicion they’ve had but didn’t fully trust themselves. My business tagline is “the Work and the Woo” — I supply the Woo part with reiki and crystals, but I also give my clients concrete ways to play with the energy in their own lives which is their Work. Empowering people to take their healing into their own hands is the backbone of my business philosophy. I love to say, and I’ve seen it time and time again, that if you bring awareness & intention around a specific area of your life (or chakra: energy center,) the Universe will begin to send growth opportunities your way. For example, if you set out to work on your throat chakra, which rules self-expression & getting your needs met, you might find that a friend starts to cross a line which gives you an opportunity to state boundaries, or a cafe might mess up your coffee order which gives you an opportunity to advocate for yourself. It can feel awkward at first, but it’s a gorgeous & important space to work within if we seek growth!
You offer PSYCH-K sessions that have always interested me. In your words, “PSYCH-K is a modality that uses affirmations to work with your subconscious mind to make real-time changes to your belief systems.” What are a few affirmations that you feel Elevator readers could really use right now?
PSYCH-K is really powerful because it takes the magic of affirmations and gives a much more instant result. It’s similar to hypnosis but you, the client, are always in control and it’s really your subconscious working things out in real time with itself. The transformations are always so neat to witness, and often we uncover additional hidden limiting beliefs to address and transform! If you read an affirmation and have a charged reaction, you likely have something there to work with! Let it be playful.
Some affirmations that feel relevant based on what I’m seeing in myself and clients lately are:
- I trust my body to take care of itself (A lot of us have relocated from our bodies into our minds during this crisis. As someone with an anxiety disorder, it can feel hard to trust my body and its sometimes scary reactions. This affirmation brings me peace.)
- I receive with ease, gratitude and joy (If we were raised to caretake others, we may have a strained relationship with receiving. If receiving and giving aren’t balanced, we can feel depleted, frustrated or resentful.)
- My needs are more important than someone else’s discomfort (Oof! Hiding our needs and our truth can have adverse effects on our health and wellbeing. When we are aligned, our truth filters through our heart and comes out with love.)
Your favorite way to elevate your life right now?
One thing that has me feeling really inspired during this time is watching people get creative in their approaches to their livelihood (Goat 2 Meeting anyone!?) I’m enjoying indulging in my own creativity, be it with literal art supplies, photos, or in my approaches to connections with others. I recharge in solitude, but also deeply crave intimacy and connection. Some ways I’ve balanced this duality are by sending flowers to a friend on her would-be wedding day, playing a sound bath for a friend’s virtual birthday party, sending wine to my favorite bartender, taking catch-up calls with friends in the Public Garden and even having a socially distant picnic with my mom! Being creative and “of service” in this way brings me so much purpose and joy!
I know you asked for one, but I have to include that movement has been a crucial piece in processing my emotions and your recommendation of The Class has truly changed my life! Aside from feeling deeply in my body, I’m also able to release (through sound or crying) stuck emotions in a cathartic way and make many connections of current day patterns back to childhood. Thank you for sharing your experience!
